Packaging Buyer Guide
How to choose wholesale shipping packaging
Choosing shipping packaging begins with the product, not the container. A buyer should document the item’s dimensions, weight, fragility, surface sensitivity, and exposure to moisture or compression. Soft goods such as apparel may fit a lightweight flat poly mailer, while books, cosmetics, accessories, and small electronics may need the cushioning of a bubble mailer. Products that are rigid, heavy, unusually shaped, or grouped together generally require a corrugated box with suitable void fill or internal protection.
Compare performance and total requirements
Material choice affects protection, packing speed, storage space, shipping weight, presentation, and disposal options. Poly mailers resist moisture and take up little warehouse space. Kraft bubble mailers provide a paper exterior and cushioning, while poly bubble mailers combine cushioning with a moisture-resistant outer layer. Corrugated boxes offer structure and stacking strength. Buyers should compare usable interior dimensions rather than relying only on a nominal size, because seams, closures, cushioning, and product thickness can reduce available space.
Plan quantities, printing, and operations
Before requesting pricing, estimate monthly usage, order frequency, storage capacity, and seasonal peaks. Custom dimensions can reduce excess material, but they may involve production minimums. Custom printing can reinforce a brand, yet the number of colors, artwork coverage, material, and print method may affect cost and schedule. Confirm whether artwork must be supplied as a vector file and whether a proof will be reviewed before production.
A complete quote request should include the packaging type, dimensions, quantity, destination, desired timing, product being packed, and any printing or material preferences. Ask the supplier to confirm case quantities, product specifications, origin, availability, estimated lead time, freight terms, and sample options for the exact item. Testing a sample with the real product and packing process is the most reliable way to check fit, closure performance, protection, label adhesion, and workflow before placing a larger order.
